See some photos of the natural beauty of the forest.

Saint Peter and the Mushrooms

The forest is particularly famous for its mushroom picking (a Czech craze). Indeed, as the folk legend goes, mushroom eating originating here!

Once upon a time, Jesus and Peter visited a small and poor house in the village of Loučen. The house was celebrating a wedding, and despite their poverty, they shared their food and entertained the pair.

The wedding cakes were so delicious that Peter pocketed several and he and Jesus made their way to the village of Jabkenice. However Peter kept nibbling the cakes on the way, delaying their progress and dropping crumbs all along the route as he responded to Jesus' many questions.

Finally Jesus ordered Peter to go back and pick up all the crumbs. He did so, but to his astonishment, the crumbs had changed into little plants with a coloured cap and stem: mushrooms. He collected them all and brought them to Jabkenice, where a local woman fried them in butter and all agreed were delicious.

Jesus promised the villagers that they would never want again for food, and indeed, to this day the St George Forest is a paradise for mushroom pickers.

The region features numerous cycling and walking trails, lakes for fishing, and the Jabkenice game park for hunting. In the winter is a superb area for cross country skiing.

The Village of Mcely

The village of Mcely is located in the small valley under two hills, in the beautiful natural scenery of Loucensky ridge, approximately 15 km from town of Nymburk, at a height of 210-270m above sea level.

The first written record from 1252 is connected with knight of Lutobor de Mocl. The manor house belonged to the noblemen of Krinec from Ronov from 1471. The manor house of Mcely was joined to the manor house of Loucen-Dobrovice of family Thurn-Taxis in 1869.

A unique gothic St. Wenceslav church from 1352 with separate belfry, presbytery and cemetery is on one of the hills in the village. The church burned down in the 17th century, and was rebuilt with a new wooden ceiling in the nave of church and also an unusual pitched roof. The church became a dominant feature of the village.

The second dominant feature is of course the Chateau Mcely, dating from 1698, extensively rebuilt in neoclassical style in 1840..

The famous Czech poet Josef Svatopluk Machar spent his childhood in Mcely. Reminiscences from his life in Mcely are often reflected in his books.
